U-GO Far: Go Forth to Realize You’re Greater Than Your Fears

Have you ever wondered how to return the kindness you’ve received? For Phuong Thao, the answer lies in over 100 km of tireless effort through sun and rain to raise funds for the very scholarship program that supports her. You don’t need to be the best, just the most persistent – her story is a reminder that: You don’t have to be strong to start, but you have to start to become strong.

Interviewer (IV): Hello! We heard that you just completed the cross-border Vietnam – Cambodia U-GO Far fundraising cycling trip. How are you feeling right now?

Thao: (Radiantly smiling) I am honestly still floating on air! It’s truly one of my most unforgettable experiences ever. It wasn’t just a trip, but also the first time I’ve ever traveled abroad, while carrying the responsibility of fundraising for those in need. Everything feels like a dream that I’ve put my absolute best effort into turning into reality.

IV: Could you share a few impressive numbers from this journey?

Thao: Well, on the first day, we covered 64 km; on the second day, it poured with rain so we faced many more difficulties, and the third day was the final 17 km stretch. What surprised me the most was that we raised $250. You know, on the first day, I kept checking my email constantly; every time I saw a notification that someone had donated, I felt indescribably overjoyed. To me, it wasn’t just fundraising money, but also everyone’s trust placed in me.

IV: We understand that the delegation comprised members from diverse international backgrounds. Did cultural differences present any obstacles for you?

Thao: Quite the opposite! Everyone’s friendliness made everything so comfortable. Even though we came from different countries with diverse cultures, we connected through kindness. To be honest, in the team, I was always the one… cycling at the very back (laughing), but everyone’s cheers helped me not give up. I used to think I couldn’t make it through such a long journey, but now I believe in myself so much more.

IV: Why did you decide to participate in U-GO Far?

Thao: For a long time, I have received immense support from the U-GO scholarship to continue my university pathway. Therefore, I have always aspired to do something to pass on the good values I have received. This trip helped fulfill that wish. I understand that every participating member carries a heavy responsibility because the cost of organizing such a trip is significant, so I always told myself to push twice as hard.

IV: If you had to use just two words to describe this trip, what would you choose?

Thao: I would choose the two words “Memorable” and “Special”. Memorable because of the challenges, the downpours, and the smiles of my teammates. Special because its value extends not only to the fund recipients, but also to participants like me – growing up, believing in ourselves, and ‘giving back’ to life through the most concrete actions.

IV: Thank you for taking the time to join us for this interview.
